Blimey! Just when you think Ilfracombe Running Club can't get any better ... it gets better than it ever got before! A bit like Donald Trump in reverse.
The 'main event' of a frankly stunning weekend of running fun was our annual summer race, The Turbine Trail. After last year's mizzle, the sun was shining like Matthew Hayne's head, and so scorching it became that several male runners were forced to shed clothing as they ran, much to the joy of Marshall 6. The whole event was expertly/haphazardly put together by Kate Romo and a willing band of fantastic volunteers. What a brilliant bunch we are.
In the ladies event it was an Ilfracombe 1-2-3 as Beth Barrington took top place on the podium, beasting the bumpy course in 55:40. 'Friend of the club' Mica Clark finished second in 58:14 with Becky Williamson (cheered on by husband Ed) trotting home barely thirty seconds later.
The men's race was scorched by hot favourite Paul Cooke of South Molton, who set a new course record of 00:44:29. Our own (for the moment, until Brexit fully kicks in) David Monge Garcia took second place on 00:48:23, with another IRC runner, the fastest postman in the west (country) Chris Broome finishing third in 00:48:41. There were plenty of top performances by a whole host of IRC runners - you can see the full results here.
A stunning weekend of running had begun on Friday, with a tight group of Ilfracombe runners taking part in the Black Rock Run, a traditional annual event run from The Red Barn in Woolacombe across the beach to the black rock, and then back. Mary Menon surprised absolutely no one by winning the ladies race in 21:31, with Beth Barrington finishing second in 22:16. Also competing were Andrew Wooff (23:20), Neil Garrett (25:58), Paul Cooper (28:58), Peter Addison (30:40) and Camilla Holroyd (40:25).
Some ultra nutters went down to Lyme Regis on Saturday to spend the day running the Ham & Lyme - either 50k or 100k. As I said, nutters! No official results yet, but Gavin 'Nutter' Burnside was timed out of the 100k as he stopped to help an ailing runner struggling at 90k. Bloody 'ell Gav will do anything for another bottle of Talisker! Helen 'Nutter' Wright was first lady and THIRD OVERALL despite having a BROKEN FOOT! Dan 'Beardy Nutter' Murdoch was SECOND OVERALL! Gob-smacking stuff.
And there's more! A handful of IRCers took the risky trek into Barnstaple for the 'Care for Kids' 10k on Sunday. Kajal Bailey finished 19th overall (second female!) in 46:04, Helen Roberts 257th in 01:19:31, and Jon Boyer 273rd in 01:28:35.
Finally(!) a shout out for some (we hope) future IRCers. Livvy Hayne won the girls kids race at the Turbine trail, with older bro' Sam Hayne finishing second in the boys category. Oh, and Harley Murdoch was the first seven-year-old home at the Black Rock Kids race! Cracking stuff!
Phew! I'm off now for a little lie down.
